Thinking About Getting a Tattoo? Here's What You Need to Know About Aftercare

Tattoos aren't just body art-they're a form of self-expression, and caring for them properly makes all the difference. Whether you're going for something small and delicate or it's your very first ink, getting tattooed is only half the journey. The real magic happens in the aftercare.

Right after your session, your new tattoo is actually an open wound. For the first 1-2 days, you might notice a mix of blood, ink, and lymph fluid coming from the area. Don't worry-this is totally normal and part of the healing process.

That said, try to avoid intense activities, sweating, or anything that might expose your skin to dirt or bacteria for the first 2-3 days. This helps keep your tattoo clean and prevents infection.

The first 24 hours are crucial. Think of it as laying the foundation for a tattoo that heals beautifully
and lasts for years.

Here's how to take care of it.

1. Keep it Clean:

Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Do this at least once or twice a day to keep the area clean.
Pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel or tissue, never rub it.

2. Apply Aftercare Ointment:

Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare ointment or healing balm recommended
by your tattoo artist. Dont over-apply. A little goes a long way.

3. Avoid Scratching or Picking:

Tattoos may itch or peel during the healing process. Resist the urge to scratch or pick,
as this can cause scarring or affect the design.

4. Stay Away from Sunlight:

Avoid exposing your tattoo to direct sunlight, especially in the first few weeks.
After it has healed, always apply sunscreen to protect it from fading due to UV rays.

5. Avoid Water Immersion:

For the first 2 weeks, avoid swimming in pools, hot tubs, or baths.
Showers are fine, but dont let the tattoo soak.

6. Keep it Moisturized:

Once the tattoo is healed, continue to moisturize the area regularly
to keep the skin hydrated and vibrant.

7. Dont Wear Tight Clothing:

Avoid wearing tight or restrictive clothing that may rub against the tattoo,
especially in the first few days.

8. Follow Artists Instructions:

Every tattoo artist may have specific aftercare instructions based on their technique or ink. Always follow their advice for the best results.
